What is the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (Y-DPP)?

The New York State Y-DPP was designed and researched by the Indiana University School of Medicine to aid in the prevention of diabetes for individuals who have pre-diabetes. The program meets for 16 weeks in a group setting where personal lifestyle goals are set for each individual. Each one-hour session will cover diet, exercise, and behavior modification to help participants achieve two primary goals:

  • Reduce and maintain individual weight loss by 5-7%
  • Participate in regular physical activity

Though lifestyle change is not easy, the goals set for the NYS Y-DPP participants are achievable. Each of us can work to reduce diabetes by supporting these lifestyle changes in ourselves, our families, and in our communities.

Did You Know?

  • Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to meet the criteria for diabetes.
  • An estimated 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes – one-third of the U.S. population.
  • Up to 83% of people with pre-diabetes will develop diabetes without any lifestyle change.
  • Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve damage.
  • Diabetes and obesity can decrease life expectancy by up to 10 years – the same as smoking.
  • Pre-diabetes and diabetes cost the U.S. health care system an estimated $218 billion dollars in 2007

The good news is that we now know how to prevent or delay diabetes in people with pre-diabetes!
